Room to Play
Share

Designing a toddler’s room means thinking beyond how the space looks right now. It needs to support movement, imagination, storage, rest, and all of the little changes that come with this stage of childhood.
For this room, the goal was to create a modern, minimal toddler boy’s bedroom with plenty of open space for play. The client wanted the room to feel clean and intentional without becoming too sparse or overly serious.
I kept the palette light and simple, using warm wood, white, soft blue, and a few cheerful pops of color throughout the room. The result feels playful enough for a young child while still fitting naturally into a modern home.
One of the biggest priorities was preserving as much usable floor space as possible.
Rather than filling the room with several large pieces of furniture, I chose a low loft-style bed that allowed us to use the footprint beneath it for storage. Clear storage bins keep toys and books accessible without adding much visual weight, while the open area around the bed leaves plenty of space for play.
Across the room, a tall white bookcase provides both open storage and concealed storage. Keeping the larger furniture pieces light in color helps them recede visually, which makes the room feel more open.
The round blue storage ottoman works especially well in the center of the play area. It adds a comfortable place to sit, creates a surface for books and activities, and offers another opportunity to tuck things away when playtime is over.

I also included a small pair of child-sized chairs and an easel to create an easy art, reading, and activity zone without requiring a dedicated table.
The room still has plenty of personality through the artwork, blue accents, vintage-inspired ride-on car, playful window treatment, and colorful accessories, but none of those elements compete with the overall simplicity of the space.
That balance was really the heart of the design.

Minimal does not have to mean empty. In a child’s room, it can simply mean giving every piece a purpose while leaving enough open space for the child to actually use the room.

Designing a Toddler Room That Can Grow
Children’s rooms do not necessarily need to be redesigned every few years.
Starting with simple furniture, useful storage, and a restrained foundation makes it much easier to update the room over time. Bedding, artwork, toys, and smaller accessories can change as interests change without requiring an entirely new space.
For this room, the larger pieces were intentionally simple while the personality came from the details.
It created a room that felt appropriate for a toddler, but not limited to toddlerhood.
