Designing Through Contradiction: A Family Living Room Full of Color, Texture, and Real Life

Some projects begin with a very clear vision.
This was not one of them. 🤣😅♥️

From the beginning, this client knew she wanted the space to feel colorful, layered, playful, bright, and full of texture. She wanted multiple seating moments throughout the room, light finishes, statement materials, art, personality, and flexibility for everyday family life. At the same time, the home was shared with young children and pets, which meant the space also needed to feel durable, functional, and easy to actually live in.

Like many real-world design projects, the challenge was not simply choosing beautiful furniture. It was helping shape clarity from a long list of evolving ideas, priorities, and inspirations.

The first concept focused heavily on creating as many seating moments as possible throughout the room. Some spaces were designed for conversation between multiple people, while others were intended to feel more personal and tucked away. At one point, the client even considered mounting the television above the fireplace in order to maximize flexibility throughout the rest of the space.

As the project evolved, we continued refining the balance between practicality and aesthetics. The client loved light colors, white marble, layered textures, and brighter palettes, so the second concept leaned much further into softness and airy finishes while exploring ways to make the room feel lighter overall.

Throughout the process, several new requests began to surface:

  • keeping the existing rocking chair
  • incorporating the existing bookcase beside the television console
  • adding a very large tv to the space
  • using darker colors
  • incorporating texture, art, and playful details throughout

The final concept became the point where everything finally clicked into place.

Instead of trying to maximize every possible seating moment, the design shifted toward creating a more open and functional family layout. We focused more intentionally on giving the children space to play while still maintaining the colorful, layered aesthetic the client loved from the beginning.

Kid-friendly materials became a major part of the conversation during this phase. Durable upholstery, approachable textures, softer edges, and practical finishes allowed the room to feel much more livable without sacrificing personality or style. The palette still feels playful and expressive, but the overall layout functions more naturally for daily life with children and pets.

One of my favorite parts of this project was watching the design evolve alongside the client’s understanding of how she actually wanted the room to function. Sometimes the most important part of the design process is not immediately finding “the answer,” but helping someone discover what feels right through exploration, iteration, and collaboration.

In the end, we landed on a space that feels bright, artistic, functional, welcoming, and genuinely personal to the family living there.

And most importantly, we were both genuinely happy with where it landed. ✨
