The Portfolio Continuum | Her Very First Dining Room 🤍🌾
This project was originally designed in 2020, and looking back on it now makes me smile. 😊 While I'd probably style a few surfaces differently today and render everything with the software I use now, the heart of this project is exactly the same.
That's why I love sharing these older spaces.
The Portfolio Continuum isn't about pretending every render was perfect. It's about celebrating the people I had the privilege of designing for and recognizing how every project helped shape the designer I am today. Every room has a story, and this one has always held a special place in my heart.
This wasn't just another dining room.
It was her first dining room. 🥹
She had never had a home with a dedicated space to gather around a table before. After purchasing this home, one of the things she was most excited about wasn't a larger kitchen or a bigger living room.
It was finally having a place where everyone could come together.
She and her husband love spending time with their two grandchildren. They play board games, work on puzzles that stay out for days, share meals, laugh over cups of coffee, and simply enjoy being together. So instead of designing for formal dinner parties, we designed for real life.
A table for four felt exactly right.
One feature that made this room especially practical was the beautiful built-in cabinet just behind the dining table. It gave us the perfect place to tuck away board games, puzzles, table linens, and everything they wanted close by without leaving the room feeling cluttered.
When we started talking about style, she kept coming back to one feeling.
She wanted the warmth of the coast without looking like she'd decorated with seashells and anchors. 🌊
Instead, we leaned into woven textures, weathered wood, natural fibers, soft sandy colors, and artwork that simply hinted at the shoreline. The room feels relaxed, welcoming, and timeless without ever becoming overly themed.
It's one of those spaces that doesn't ask for attention.
It simply makes you want to pull out a game, pour another cup of coffee, and stay awhile. 🤎
Looking back now, I don't think about the render quality first.
I think about a family making memories around this table.
And honestly, that's still my favorite part of designing homes. The furniture and finishes matter, but they're only the backdrop. The real design happens in the conversations, the traditions, the laughter, and the moments that unfold long after the project is complete.
That's the kind of home I'll always love designing. ✨
